Happy Accidents

Bob Ross often said of painting (and of life), “There are no mistakes, just happy accidents.” This can ring true in photography as well — particularly with film photography.

I recently ran through a few rolls of film, which were just developed (shout out to thedarkroom.com). One roll that I shot back in Fall 2019 of Kodak Tri-X 400 speed black and white film was apparently not wound all the way into the canister after use; it appears I mistook it for a new roll and loaded it into the camera again in Spring 2020. This resulted in every shot being a double exposure.

While I’m disappointed that I couldn’t evaluate each session independently, the double exposure results produced some unique imagery that I doubt I’d have concocted on purpose.

Equipment:

  • Camera: Canon AE-1

  • Lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8

  • Film: Kodak Tri-X 400 (shot & developed at 400)
